The south coast of Brittany is a beautiful sailing area. For a summer holiday already at a reasonable distance from the Netherlands so we don't see many dutch boats anymore. The area we actually wanted to do last year, so it's nice to see it after all. From Brest we sail in a short trip to Camaret. This is a nice 'springboard' harbour for the crossing to Spain. But we have plenty of time, so we decide to explore another part of the south Breton coast.
So after a long day of sailing we arrive in Guilvinec. A beautiful Breton fishing village where we are the only visitors. On the way there, we see dolphins. About 8 of them swim around the boat for about 2 minutes and then disappear again. A beautiful sight though! We also try to catch a fish with the fishing-rod we got from Raymond and Angela. Without success; probably the lead is too light for our speed. In Guilnivec we buy a heavier lead in a very big fish-shop. Better luck next time!
After Guilnivec we visit Benodet, the river Belon and Lorient, all within 2-3 hours sailing distance of each other. Benodet is a chic seaside resort at the mouth of a river. The marina is on the river and there is a current of about 4 knots at the height of the tide which makes it difficult to moor. We have no problems (because the current is just away from the jetty and the wind is towards it), but a few hours later we get Dutch neighbours who miss our boat by inches and crash into the jetty right in front of us with the current behind them. They are very nice people and the next morning we are invited for coffee. Then it's laundry time as well and for the first time in my life I do my laundry at a laundrette. What a time-consuming project and it is not even really clean. Next time I will use different detergents and wash hotter.
The river Belon is a beautiful place. Between two buoys on the river, in the middle of nature with a small village famous for its oysters. They taste delicious indeed!
From Belon we also spend a day with Dennis and Marja. We are picked up in the morning (with a second car from Marja's brother) and explore the Breton inlands. At Roche du Diables we climb over large rocks in the middle of the river and almost lose Gwen's shoe after Toine accidentally drops it in the water. Fortunately it gets stuck behind a rock and Dennis can grab it. In the afternoon we're at the caravan, nice to see it again after all these years and in the evening we have a delicious bbq in an alternative way (see pictures). A very pleasant day and well taken care of! So now we really have to say goodbye for the coming year.
In the meantime, we have regular contact with the Valentine and we know that they are on their way to Brittany so we can make the crossing to Spain together. As the weather looks now we will leave tomorrow and after more than 60 hours sailing we will arrive in La Cornuna, Spain in the course of Thursday.
